Catalytic converters taken from vehicles in UW lots
News

Three thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles have been reported to University of Wisconsin police over the last two weeks.

Thieves are targeting vehicles with a higher clearance, like SUVs, and police said Toyota SUVs are favored because the catalytic converters are attached with bolts.

Police said the thefts can happen in about three minutes and can cost the vehicle?s owner between $1,200 and $3,000 to replace.

The victim?s vehicles were parked in lot 60, on the west side of campus near UW Hospital and Clinics. Thefts have also been reported in the Eagle Heights Community.

Police recommend etching identifying information on the converter to assist in tracking it if it?s stolen.

Anyone who?s been a victim or has information is asked to call UW police at 608-264-2677.
