Winter sport event raises money for zoo exhibit | News
The Henry Vilas Zoo and Fontana Sports will be holding three snowshoeing events to raise money for the Arctic Passage Project, according to a release.
The first-annual Fontana Sports Shoe the Zoo events will include one-hour introductory snowshoeing lessons at Vilas Park Jan.11, Jan. 25 and Feb 9, organizers said.
?If you can walk, you can snowshoe. It?s easy, fun and a great way to get outdoors and get some exercise during the winter months,? Elizabeth Hutchinson, event organizer and Operation Manager of Fontana Sports, said in the release.
Hutchinson said all you need to participate in the sport is comfortable, warm outerwear, boots and snowshoes.
?Friends of the Henry Vilas Zoo and the Henry Vilas Zoo are so excited to be the beneficiaries of Shoe the Zoo. We thank Fontana Sports for their efforts to bring the bears back to Madison,? Executive Director of Friends of Henry Vilas Zoo Alison Prange said.
Funds will go to the Artic Passage Exhibit that will bring polar bears and grizzly bears back to the Henry Vilas Zoo, according to the release. The Artic Passage is expected to open in late Spring of 2015, and will offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the bears, as well as seals.
Fontana Sports is donating 50 percent of the $20 lesson fee to the Henry Vilas Zoo, according to the release. Pre-registration for the 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. lesson times is required.
