MPD calls home invasions 'particularly troublesome'
News

Madison police are calling two recent armed home invasions on the city?s near west side ?particularly troublesome.?

Officers said the home invasions in the Greenbush and Vilas neighborhoods involved ground level homes occupied by college-age residents who might have been targeted because they?re likely to possess new electronics.

The first incident took place on Sunday evening on Vilas Avenue and the other took place Wednesday morning on Adams Street.

The two robbers involved in the Adams Street robbery might also be responsible for the robbery of two people in their driveway in the 1900 block of University Avenue. Police said that on Sept. 4 the two residents were approached by the robbers. One of the robbers showed them a handgun and demanded money and cellphones.

?I?ve lived here for three years now. We?ve never really had anything like that happen here. I have had some screens and stuff broken, but never anything stolen or anything like that. It?s a little surprising,? said Kevin Hayes, who lives on Adams Street.

The men were described as black and 18-20 years old and both were wearing dark clothes and a hooded sweatshirt. One of them was 5 feet 9 inches tall, skinny, weighing 140-150 pounds with a shaved head. The other was 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a medium build and weighing 160 pounds. The victim said both men smelled of marijuana.

Police are asking residents to be on alert for the men and call Dane County 911 if they?re spotted. Residents should also lock their doors even when they?re at home and lock windows, especially windows at ground level.

?It?s really important we get these guys off the street. This is very dangerous, and I encourage folks to call Crime Stoppers with any information that would help us lead to the arrest and apprehension of these two individuals,? said Lt. Joe Balles, Madison Police Department south district captain.
