About Us

Wingra School

Wingra School is a small, independent day school providing a progressive education for children ages 5-14 in the greater Madison area.

The school was founded in 1972 by parents and teachers seeking a high quality educational experience alternative for their own and others' children. The founders - five women with considerable experience in fields of education and child development- were particulary influenced by a version of progressive education.

Wingra School has always featured a thematic, integrated curriculum and multi-aged classrooms equipped with materials appropriate to children's varied interests and abilities.

WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT EDUCATION

We are a progressive school.
We see children as individuals and encourage them to be deep thinkers and wonderers who ask questions.

We respect childhood.
We honor the age, developmental stage, interests and capabilities of each of our students, ages 5-14.

We foster self-directed learners.
We believe children are active constructors of their own knowledge and we equip them to participate in learning in authentic, purposeful and meaningful ways.

We plant seeds of positive social change.
We teach tolerance, conflict resolution, appreciation for different points of view, listening skills and advocacy.

We build integrated thematic units of study.
Students experience connections between the sciences, arts, literacy, mathematics and technology.

We invite children to see the whole world as their classroom.
We draw upon the expertise in our community and the abundant resources around us to enrich our program.

We offer a low student to teacher ratio in every multi-age classroom.
Our staff also includes specialists in the areas of art, library, music, physical education, Spanish and technology.

Testimonials

Wingra's more substantive approach to education prepared me for academic success at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. At Wingra, you learn how to learn. --- Alumni
I love our drives home when he's talking to me about what they've done that day and are going to do tomorrow. He hates to miss school. --- Current Parent
My child is learning to think on her own after considering information. She’s learning to listen to others, to cooperate to solve problems and to advocate for her needs. She’s being challenged to think about topics that are current and to examine them in a historical perspective. She’s learning to ask questions and seek answers.” --- Current Parent
It was the best investment we ever made in our son’s future --- Alumni Parent
Students develop confidence in themselves and their ability to react to situations in the real world; they learn social as well-as academic skills in mixed-level classrooms while respecting all cultures and values. --- Alumni Parent
I am extremely grateful for my Wingra education. It has been extremely formative of not just my academic experiences but in who I have turned out to be. --- Alumni
Wingra School provides students the opportunity to fully engage in their learning. They are able to exercise their own voices while making active choices in their own learning process, and learning through meaningful, hands-on experiences. All of this with the close guidance of educators who are creating exciting curricula designed with students’ minds in mind. --- Current Parent
